Waka Ama is a growing sport in secondary schools and the Waikato region have won many national titles. Each year there are two main regional events. Sprint Waka Ama championships usually staged at Lake Ngaroto near Te Awamutu in March – April period and a Distance Championship event at Te Puru on the Thames Coast in early November. If your school is interested in starting Waka Ama contact the team at WSSSA.
NOTE: Due to health and safety concerns at Lake Ngaroto, the lake levels for cyanobacteria are five times higher than what is acceptable for recreational contact and use. Not wanting to place a risk on the participants and event volunteers or increase the load on the lake environment, Te Puku O Te Ika Inc as the event organisers for this year’s Waikato Secondary Schools Sprint Championships have postponed the event to later in the year. An alternative date will be advised when set.
