The Waikato Secondary Schools Sports Association Incorporated, [WSSSA] is governed by an elected executive committee of Secondary School Principals representing the Principals from the Central North Island Secondary School Principals Association [CNISSPA]. A member of this organisation is a representative of the New Zealand Secondary Schools Sports Council [NZSSSC] board. The current representative is Marie Gordon, of Hamilton Girls’ High School.

 

Waikato Secondary Schools Sports Association supports over 45 schools within the region which have a total school student roll of over 26,000 students. The region covers the heartland of the Central North Island including from in the north, Te Kauwhata and the Thames Coromandel district through to Waihi, west of the Kaimai ranges to include Matamata, South Waikato to Tokoroa, and the Waipa and King Country districts including Taumarunui.

 

The WSSSA is supported by Sport Waikato in its day to day management through the employment of one part-time staff member, Administrator (Ella Major). Key aspects of the organisation are supporting the capability of school sports staff, creation and the sanctioning process of an effective calendar of sporting events for the schools, and actively working with sports bodies to deliver accessible opportunities and pathways for all secondary school student-athletes in over 35 sports codes.

 

The Waikato region has a proud heritage of developing youth talent to the international arena from provincial New Zealand and endorses its young people being “out there and active”.
