Term 1 in the Waikato region has been a solid start for secondary school sports, with students competing in a range of events like futsal, motocross, golf, and mountain biking. Schools demonstrated strong participation and teamwork across the board, setting the tone for an engaging year ahead in sports. Whether it was on the field, court, or track, the sports community has come together to create a term filled with passionate for their codes and our rangatahi.

Waikato Secondary Schools Show Jumping 2025
The Waikato Secondary Schools Show Jumping competition for 2025 showcased outstanding equestrian talent across the region, with schools competing fiercely for the top spots.
St. Peter’s Red emerged as the winners, securing 1st place with an impressive score of 38 points, demonstrating their exceptional teamwork and skill. Sharing the top score of 38 points, Te Awamutu College Yellow earned 2nd place, proving their dedication and consistency. In a close finish, St. Peter’s Navy secured 3rd place with 35.5 points, marking another strong performance for the school’s equestrian program.
The event highlighted the remarkable strength and passion within Waikato’s secondary school equestrian community. Congratulations to all the competitors for their incredible achievements!

Waikato Athletics
The journey to the WBOP Athletics Championship was marked by outstanding performances across various zones, showcasing the depth of talent in the region. The Central Zone Athletics, Thames Valley Athletics, and King Country, Northwest, and South Waikato Athletics events all led up to the eagerly awaited WBOP Athletics Championship. This meet brought together the top athletes from each zone to vie for cross regional honors with Bay of Plenty. The championship showcased the unwavering dedication and exceptional efforts of all competitors, serving as a true testament to athletic excellence.

Ultimate Frisbee Summer Tournament Day
The day was absolutely fantastic, with perfect conditions for playing and an incredible turnout of motivated, spirited teams giving it their all. It was awesome to see a great mix of our teams from the Wednesday night Schools league alongside teams from across the wider Waikato region.
A special shoutout goes to the many players who participated in their very first tournament—it’s inspiring to watch them take their first steps on this journey, and we can’t wait to see them grow and thrive as players in the future.

Ultimate Frisbee had a fantastic term with 16 Secondary School teams competing weekly. The introduction of a girls’ division marked a milestone, and the strong support from adults cheering and managing teams added to the event’s success. WaiBOP Schools Mountain Biking XC Championship 2025
The WaiBOP Schools Mountain Biking XC Championship 2025 showcased incredible talent and teamwork, highlighting the exceptional skills and determination of young riders. With schools from the region participating, the event celebrated both individual and team accomplishments while fostering a passion for the sport. A big thank you to the organizers for their hard work in making this event possible and to all the participants for their enthusiasm and dedication, which truly made the championship a success.

Waikato Secondary School Tennis Championships 2025
Congratulations to all players and schools who participated in the 2025 Waikato/Thames Valley Secondary Schools Singles & Doubles Championships this week. It was fantastic to see such strong competition, great sportsmanship, and enthusiastic support from teammates and spectators. The event was filled with high-quality tennis, teamwork, and a positive spirit both on and off the courts.
A special thank you to Tournament Director Rosie Smith for her exceptional work in managing and overseeing the tournament, and to the school coordinators for organizing their teams. Your dedication played a key role in making this event a success

Kerepehi Give it a go pairs day – Bowls
The Kerepehi Give It a Go Pairs Day marked an exciting milestone as the first bowls event featured on our calendar. Students embraced the opportunity to learn the game, and their enthusiasm shone brightly as they took to the greens. It was a day filled with fun, laughter, and newfound skills, making it a memorable experience for everyone involved. The event beautifully highlighted the joy of trying something new and coming together as a community.
Waikato Secondary Schools Matchplay Golf Championship 2025
The Waikato Secondary School Matchplay Golf Championship 2025 showcased an impressive level of skill and competition, it witnessed remarkable participation, with 19 schools and 80 players involved—our highest turnout to date. Highlights included Jio Jeoung from St Peters School securing the title of Overall Secondary Schools Matchplay Champion and proudly holding the trophy. Charlie Tawhiti of Hauraki Plains College claimed the Maungakawa Shield as the Boys’ Strokeplay Winner, while Baylee Ross, also from St Peters School, triumphed as the Girls’ Strokeplay Winner, marking her second consecutive victory with the Maungakawa Shield. The championship also celebrated outstanding achievements by the Overall Division Champions.

Futsal Championship 2025
The Secondary Schools Futsal Championship brought together passionate young athletes for an intense and action-packed competition. Teams from various schools showcased their skills, teamwork, and determination on the futsal courts. The event was a celebration of the growing popularity of futsal among students, providing them with the opportunity to compete, learn, and have fun.

Waikato Schools MX Challenge
The Waikato Schools MX Challenge was an incredible event, drawing a total of 250 riders over two action-packed days. In the Secondary Schools competition, Paeroa College emerged as champions, securing 1st place, followed by Tauranga Boys College in 2nd, and Hamilton Boys High in 3rd. A huge congratulations to all the riders and schools involved for their impressive efforts and sportsmanship!
Burgess Regatta 2025
The Burgess Trophy 2025 proved to be a resounding success, showcasing the best of regional school sailing. Held at the centrally located Hamilton Lake, the event featured 14 schools, with standout performances from St Peter’s and Hamilton Boys’ High School, securing 110.6 and 97.5 points respectively. Spectators were treated to the thrill of stadium racing, while sailors and their supporters praised the venue’s excellent facilities and accessibility. Despite light and shifting winds creating challenges for race management, feedback remained overwhelmingly positive. With engaging on-shore activities, handmade trophies, and a sportsmanship award, the event had something for everyone. Organizers hope to attract more full-sized teams in the future and build on this year’s success.
