🏅 Term 2 in Waikato was packed with action, energy, and standout performances across a wide range of sports. From the greens of the Intercollegiate Golf Championships to the grit of Cross Country trails and the splash of Swimming championships, our rangatahi showed up with determination and pride. With hundreds of students competing in regional events, the term was a true celebration of athletic spirit and school pride.
Whether it was team triumphs or individual brilliance, Term 2 proved that Waikato sport is thriving—and the momentum heading into Term 3 is stronger than ever.
🏆 With the winter season in full swing, several Waikato secondary school leagues are heating up — even if the final results aren’t in just yet!
- Lacrosse: The Waikato Lacrosse Association is running weekly competitions across boys’ and girls’ divisions, with schools like Cambridge High and Te Awamutu College fielding strong squads. The season is packed with development opportunities and fierce matchups as teams eye the NZ Secondary School Championships later this year.
- Hockey: From Premier to Reserve grades, the Waikato Hockey Association has teams battling it out across multiple venues. The Gallagher Hockey Centre is buzzing with action as schools compete in both local and intercity fixtures, building momentum toward finals in Term 3.
- Netball (Hamilton City Netball Centre): Courts at HCNC are alive with energy as Saturday and Thursday leagues run across senior, junior, mixed, and social grades. With tournaments like the Secondary Premier & Development event, schools are showcasing talent and teamwork in every match.
- Basketball: The Greater Waikato Secondary School Basketball League (GWSSBL) is in full swing, with games across junior and senior divisions lighting up venues like The Peak and Fraser High. Premier teams are battling for top seeds, while open and reserve grades showcase depth and rising talent.
- Football: The Waikato Secondary School Football Association’s leagues are underway, with knockout rounds and regular fixtures keeping teams busy. Premier divisions are especially competitive, and schools are already strategizing for the business end of the season.
Each league is a showcase of school spirit, athleticism, and community pride — and while the scoreboards are still evolving, the passion is unmistakable
Inter-Collegiate Teams Day and Champs Day – Golf
🏌️♂️ The 2025 Waikato Secondary Schools Champs Day showcased exceptional talent across both individual and team golf competitions.
St Peters Cambridge dominated the individual leaderboard, with standout performances from Jio Jeoung (gross score 75) and multiple teammates finishing in the top ten. On the team front, Hamilton Boys High School #1 emerged as the overall champions, led by strong showings from Flynn ter Beek, Ricci Putohe, and Jefferson Lovelock.
The event highlighted the depth of golfing skill across the region, with schools like Matamata College, Cambridge High School, and Hauraki Plains College also making their mark. A thrilling day of competition and camaraderie on the greens!

🏊♂️ The 2025 Waikato Secondary Schools Swimming records and points standings reflect a thrilling season of speed, skill, and school pride.
New records were set across multiple events, with standout swims from athletes like Ariella Riley, Neo Urlich, and Alanna Rawson, Chloe Peters, and Rylee Sayer, who etched their names into the history books with blistering times in butterfly, breaststroke, and freestyle events.
In the Champs Points tally, Waikato Diocesan School and Hamilton Boys’ High School led the charge, racking up top scores through consistent podium finishes and dominant relay performances. With Hamilton Boys High Schools taking first place for Combined Team Scores with 1,540 points total!!!

🏃♀️ The 2025 Central, King Country, Northwest, and South Waikato Zone Secondary Schools Cross Country Championships delivered a day of grit, speed, and school pride across Tauhara Park.
On the team front, schools like Cambridge High School, Hamilton Girls’ High School, St John’s College, and Waikato Diocesan School dominated various categories. From Year 9 to Senior (U20), both 3-person and 6-person teams showcased depth and cohesion, with tight finishes and impressive cumulative placings.
The event was a celebration of endurance and teamwork, with athletes pushing limits and schools rallying behind their runners.

Squash – Individuals and Teams
🏆 The 2025 Waikato Secondary Schools Squash Championships served up fierce rallies and standout performances across both individual and team divisions.
In the individual competition, players like Charlee Neilson (Te Awamutu) and Francesca Pilcher showcased elite skill, with Neilson taking out Girls Division 1 and Pilcher winning the Junior Girls Division 1 title. On the boys’ side, Riley Noonan (Hamilton Boys’) and Luke Downard (Te Awamutu) were among the top performers, with Noonan claiming Junior Boys Division 1 and Downard earning gold in Division 3.
The team events were equally thrilling. Hamilton Girls’ High School secured their 10th consecutive girls’ team title, led by Maiya Hotham, Dayna Burr, and Tayla Millen. In the boys’ competition, Hamilton Boys’ High School #1 dominated Division 1, while St Paul’s Collegiate and Cambridge High School earned top spots in lower divisions through cohesive team play and strategic matchups.
From powerful serves to nail-biting finishes, the championships celebrated the depth and passion of squash across Waikato’s secondary schools.

🧗♀️ The Waikato Secondary Schools Rock Climbing Championship brought together 86 enthusiastic competitors for a day of adrenaline, skill, and camaraderie at Extreme Edge Hamilton. Students from across the region showcased their strength and strategy on the wall, with impressive performances across all categories. The event ran smoothly and celebrated the growing passion for climbing among rangatahi.
